Habits are the backbone of life. You do certain things every day, whether you are aware of them or not, that are habits. What is the first thing you do when you wake up in the morning? Do you have a routine for brushing your teeth, getting dressed, making breakfast? These are all habits.
In his book, “The Power of Habit“, Charles Duhigg explains how we can take current habits and change them to be beneficial to our lives. It is all based on changing the reward. Granted, it is a bit more complicated than that and takes some effort to achieve, but if you read the book you will understand the methods.
According to the dictionary, successful is defined as “having achieved popularity, profit, or distinction.” Have you ever wondered why some people are so successful and some people never quite seem to make it to any tangible level of success even though they may have the same education or experience?
It may ultimately come down to their habits. Let’s think about 10 things that these people who have achieved success may routinely do that the others may not.
1. Keep a Daily Journal
Journaling is one of the most important things you can do. Not only should you record your daily events, you should write down your short and long-term goals. Putting your goals in writing “makes them real” and solidifies them in your subconscious. It helps to hold you accountable for them. Not only write down your goals, but also some ideas on how you may achieve those goals.
2. Work Out
Mental fitness is supported by physical fitness. Clearing your mind and getting a workout in at least 3 days a week helps keep you balanced and focused.
3. Check Your Ego
Understanding that you are not capable of doing everything is a tremendous asset. As a leader, your greatest skill can be acting quickly on valuable information. Knowing when to use the skills of others is invaluable to both staying sane and to making solid decisions in life.
4. Surround Yourself With Positive People
In today’s world of instant communication and people hiding behind the anonymity of the internet, it is easy to find yourself being dragged down by haters and negative people. This leads to toxicity in your life. Successful people do not look for the negative in other people. Surround yourself with positive, uplifting people.
5. Ask the Right Questions
Successful people tend to ask a lot of questions. Not meaningless questions, however. They ask questions that will create a more productive and positive mindset that could help them achieve their goals.
6. Stop Blaming Others
Successful people normally take responsibility for their actions and outcomes. Taking responsibility empowers you and allows you to build upon your successes or failures while blaming others will simply make you look powerless.
7. Get In the Game
Successful people tend to be busy and active. They very rarely sit and wait for opportunities to come to them. They also rarely tend to over-think or over-plan ideas or activities, they take steps to move forward on those ideas or activities quickly.
8. If You Can’t Control It, Let It Go
Successful people rarely have time to deal with things that they have no control over. They do not want to invest time, emotions, or money into anything of which that they cannot control the end result.
9. The Follow-Through is Important
In a world where so many things get started but very few things actually get finished, it is the successful person that will finish what they start. This is an important habit because there is usually time and money invested into starting projects and you started a project to benefit in some way.
10. Don’t Take It Personal
People don’t become successful by taking every comment or piece of criticism personally. The most successful people use that constructive criticism and learn from it by improving their methods or actions.
Success is a relative term. What I consider successful may very well be different from what you consider to be successful.
There are definitely certain actions and habits that many people who are defined as successful do on a daily basis that other people fail to do. I am, in no way, saying that if you do these things, you will be successful. I am also not saying that every successful person does these things.
I think that these 10 habits are great for anyone to follow, successful or not. They are basic guidelines to being a good human being and becoming the best person you could possibly be. If you do master these habits, you will definitely be successful in my eyes.
